I agree, XP Home isn't the best . If the computer is hanging/ crashing constantly I would be tempted to do a complete re-installation from the recovery disks. Before doing that however maybe have a look in task manager and see what processes you have running. Also, check what programs you have starting at bootup (msconfig).
Maybe one of the more technically minded people would have some further suggestions?

Dave,
XP Home is just like Pro without the bells and whisles on networking and encryption. Actually it's one of the best SOHO OS'es MS have ever made.

im not going to poop stir but i must agree linux is the best os that... wait we are talking about xp no? aw crap.... now the whole linux vs microsoft vs apple is going to blow up again... tee hee
The persistant hanging/freezing is a common side effect of a small virus and thats the only side effect it has I think. Try looking in the taskmanager for anything sounding dodgy and check in msconfig that no dodgy processes have been started.

Thanks for the responses..
Checking the task manager was one of the first things that i did...also using MSCONFIG
still no joy
Im assuming that I might have to do a re-install...
not too happy about that though!
still searching for an easier option...

Hmm, not so good on encryption eh? Well, I'm sure that we don't need it anyway . . . .
Also, why not just have Win XP? Surely once you (that's Bill Gates & Co) have developed XP Pro why water it down for XP Home?

As with all MS related questions - it always comes down to the hard cash.

Couldn't agree more Dave, but as Rob said, it's all run by cash.
