I have just checked with a colleague and the response I had was:

No it won’t work. The storage in the phone is not directly accessible as a simple USB memory device. 

Some products do play directly from an IPhone or Ipod, these are normally described as ‘Made for IPod’

It may be worth checking out http://developer.apple.com/programs/mfi/
