STRDN1080 with 3 ohm speakers
I have a Panasonic surround system with Blu-ray player and want to replace it over time with the UBP-X800M2 blu-ray player and new speakers, but I want to start by adding the STRDN1080 AV receiver, but the 5.1 speakers I have are all rated at 3 ohms, 125 watt max. for the 4 floorstanders and 250 watt max. for the centre. Would these work or would it ruin the receiver? I am not looking to shake the walls, just get a good clear surround sound for movies.

To clarify, I was thinking of running the speaker cables to the AVR rather than through the blu-ray player and running the blu-ray player to the AVR via HDMI. Alternatively, if I ran the speakers through the blu-ray player and then connected that to the AVR via HDMI would that lose the sound benefits of the AVR? The surround system I have is the Panasonic SC-BT205. Thanks Craig

As you know, what you are proposing is outside the acceptable specification and cannot be supported.
I found myself in exactly the same situation wanting a STRDN1080 but with 3 ohm Sony HT-AS5 speakers mounted around the room. I decided that the risk was too great, they would draw double the current. So I opted for the HT-ZF9/SA-Z9R soundbar instead and haven't looked back. Fantastic sound and rear wireless speakers easy to mount anywhere.
