I bought a brand new Sony Xperia X Compact and started it up for the first time yesterday. It is constantly updating, almost hourly, and as it updates it becomes very hot. Is this right? When will it settle down?

The phone had numerous updates since its launch and that's why you're getting them one by one. Either be patient and install them all until you reach the recent version, or alternatively, perform a software repair using Xperia Companion. This will do a clean installation of the latest firmware and will also wipe your internal memory.
