Messaging does not recognise contacts saved to my gmail account

I have Xperia L1. When writing a text in Messaging, it does not recognise contacts saved to my gmail account only those saved to phone contacts. On going into settings and Xperia, it says Google account not synced. In the menu I click sync now and nothing happens. Google account settings says email account is synced. Can't find any online help. Maybe it would be easier to turn contacts into phone contacts?  Anyone any ideas please?

Go into contacts app, then top left, click the three lines, select settings, then change "contacts to display" to ALL.

also check to make sure your Google account is listed in the menu.
