A6000 kit lens won't focus?

Bear with me here... About a decade ago I used to shoot film, so I'm not a stranger to using manual settings, but I'm really struggling with the tech side of my new a6000.

Mainly, I cannot get it to focus on anything closer than about 12-15" away, even on the macro setting. It won't focus clearly on foreground when zoomed, either. speed test

The other thing I'm struggling with is low light shooting. Tried to take some photos indoors on an overcast day, just to get acquainted with the camera, and it again struggled to focus, and even slight movements came out as a blur in the photo. This happened on auto settings, but also when I atteshowbox mpted to adjust for the low light manually.

So I guess my question is, are these issues related to the limitations of the lens, or my rusty techniques?

Hi begnpitch

I don’t think the macro setting changes the minimum focusing distance which is about 10 inches. See if anything here helps:

Here is a quick tutorial on how to auto focus and shoot with the Sony a6000 / a6300 mirrorless camera in low light reliably and fast! I also did this with "live view effects" off. This method also works on the a5100, A7, A7II, A7s, A7R and RX1. If you are using the A7II Make sure "phase focusing"
