Banking apps not working on Xperia 10 VI

Software is fully up to date and I have uninstalled and reinstalled the apps in question, and still they don't work correctly. 

This applies to UK Nationwide Anglia and Lloyds banking apps. 

The message appears "app not responding: close/wait".

I can use the apps but the message above re-appears every 10 seconds or so which makes operating them slow and frustrating. The apps are up to date, my phone software is up to date, I have restarted the phone between every significant action, but every time I re-register on the apps and try to use it the message appears. 

The banks have no knowledge of this issue and because of the reinstalling and re-registering, and because it affects two proprietary banking apps in exactly the same way, it is clearly an issue with the phone, which is totally up to date on its Android version. 

It is an XQ-ES54.

 

Sony suggested reinstalling, etc. etc. checking stamina mode isn't on (it isn't) etc. etc. The only thing I haven't done is a hard reset of the entire phone which I am not going to do. 

 

Can anyone help or has anyone else had this problem? I can't seem to get any further with Sony itself. It would be a nuisance but I am tempted to return the phone under guarantee (it's still less than a year old) although I don't know whether that us possible.
