How to record from Television

I have a Sony KDL-42W653A Bravia TV set and would like to record direct from the TV to a external hard drive connected to the TV by a USB lead.Can someone tell me what I need to do.I currently have a old Humax set top box which I use to record but it is starting to get unreliable.Any advice appreciated.

Thank's for that info at present I use a Humax Set Top box to record but it is getting a bit unreliable so will use a 250gb external drive connected to the USB Socket.Will I be able to set a timer recording for say a week in advance or will I only be able to record day by day.Also I believe once the hard drive has been set up to record I will no longer be able to use it on my PC that is why I am only going to use a 250gb drive.I did think of getting a 100gb drive but do you think that would be big enough as it is only for recording some TV programs when we are out.Thnk's again.
