Surround 5.1 output from KDL W829 only from DTV tuner?

So I've been doing some digging and experimenting with my new W829 and come to the conclusion:

5.1 is only output over ARC HDMI (optical is 2 channel)
5.1 is only output from DTV channels

If this is correct then I think describing this TV as outputting 5.1 is a bit misleading. You'll be lucky to find a 5.1 programme in the UK; the only ones are on BBC1 and Channel 4 and rare.

All these lovely music and movie apps on the TV won't output anything other than 2 ch. The same goes for the media player connected to USB or a Media server. Or any HDMI inputs going in to the TV but you probably wouldn't use those

You might as well ignore this side of the TV and do as much as you can on the PS3/4 as those do actually output 5.1.

Sony really needs to sort out 5.1 passthrough

I don't use HDMI Arc but I can definitely say I get 5.1 surround from Netflix and from my attached media server via my amp which also displays Dolby digital, all connected using optical too.
