ALPS Touchpad doesn't work after Viao BIOS Update

When I updated the BIOs on my new Viao (Model VPCEE3JOE) running Windows 7 (64 bit), I lost the use of the touchpad mouse - so far I've managed with a wireless mouse, but I want to get full functionality back!

If I look in the Device Manager under "Mice and Other Pointing Devices" I can see a device called

"ALPS pointing device for VAIO" - but the icon has a yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in it on top and if I open the device properties it says :

"This device is not present, is not working properly, or does not have all its drivers installed. (Code 24)"

The driver version is 7.107.505.106

Any idea how I can get my touchpad back?

Hi iliad58,

The following procedure can sometimes resolve this type of issue.

Shut down and remove both the power adaptor and battery.

Hold down the power switch for 30 seconds.

Re-connect the battery and power adaptor and reboot.

Top Man!. I had the same problem and I followed your instructions and all fixed.

This is the first time I have been on hear since I got my VAIO in September and its saved me lots of hassle.

Hi Ian,

Here are a few things you can try:

1 Open Vaio Control Center > Keyboard and Mouse > Pointing Device – make sure that ‘Enable’ is ticked.

2 Open Control Panel > Device Manager > Mice and other pointing devices – right click ‘ALPS pointing device for VAIO’, select uninstall and reboot. On reboot the device should be recognised and drivers reinstalled.

3 Try reverting to the originally installed pointing device driver (7.101.505.102) -http://www.sony.co.uk/support/en/product/VPCEE3J0E_BQ/downloads/Alps_Touchpad_Driver_7.107.505.102_5277 -Download and extract to a known location. Open Device Manager, right click the pointing device and choose ‘Update Driver’. Use the ‘Have Disk’ method and point to the Vi64 folder. The file you are looking for is Apfiltr.inf.

Instructions for ‘Have Disk’ method:

Extract the files from the installation package to a known location.

Click Start > Control Panel.

Double click Device Manager.

Right click the device and select Properties

Click the Driver tab.

Click Update Driver.

Click Browse my computer for driver software.

Click Let me pick from a list...

Click Have Disk....

Click Browse and navigate to the folder where you placed the extracted files (Vi64).

Click OK.

Click Next.

Click Finish.

Reboot your system.

Hi Rich,

Apologies for not getting back to you - the hard drive on my laptop died and the machine has been off for repair - Christmas & my own holidays meant I have only just got it back.

When it came back, the repairs made report said they have also replaced the ALPS pad!
