Since yesterday the speed test icon on my home screen won't load the app. Other apps on home screen work fine. Not sure what's going on.

uninstall the app > reinstall the app

Do you have any taskillers or antivirus?

You don't quite need an antivirus or taskillers or task managers, uninstall them > restart your phone > check again

I'm a bit confused. I'm new to android having had an iPhone for years. I thought I would need a virus checker ?? Also, what is an app killer?

As long as you download apps from the play store, and you don't visit dubious websites you should be OK. A taskiller will stop/kill running apps in the background, this sound like a good idea but it isn't as this apps will reopen soon after, thus draining more battery than letting them run, also it can create connectivity issues
