I've had the Sony KD-65XE9005 for nearly 3 years now. Very happy with it. My speaker set-up is an old Yamaha DSP-A5 receiver linked to Bose Acoustimass sub + 5 cube speakers, so I get Dolby Digital 5.1, which is fine but I'm thinking of upgrading, and am very keen on a Dolby Atmos enabled system.

I have Apple 4k TV which I use for most of my on-demand content (Netflix, iPlayer, etc), so I have an Atmos-enabled source there (plus a Sony Blu Ray player & Virgin Media Tivo v6, which also is Atmos enabled I believe). I was looking at the new Sonos Arc Atmos soundbar, but with only 1 HDMI (to the TV), as the TV doesn't have Atmos passthrough, I don't think I'll get true Atmos sound, correct? I'll get the "lossy" version?

However, if I bought an Atmos soundbar with multiple HDMI's, I could connect my Apple 4k TV, Sony Blu Ray player & Tivo box to the soundbar to get true Dolby Atmos (assuming content is broadcasting in Atmos)? Is that my best solution? I guess the alternative is a Dolby Atmos receiver + separate speakers, but I'm keen to lose speakers rather than replace the ones I have.

Hi Paul.

Going with a high end receiver could have many benefits for future upgrades such as having different zones and flexibility with the speaker set up as it can always be revisited for additional upgrades.

Hi again.

Hopefully a simple one to answer ... I know the KD-XE9005 doesn't support Dolby Atmos with Dolby True HD, but as it does support Dolby Digital Plus, presumably that means I can get Atmos output just not lossless, as would be with True HD?

For example, connect Apple 4k TV into the TV through HDMI 2.0 cable, then connect Sonos Arc soundbar (Atmos enabled) to TV through HDMI Arc cable ... I should get Dolby Atmos via Dolby Digital Plus on the Arc soundbar (but at compressed bitrate, not lossless)?

Hi @paul1simon ,

That's correct. If you connect it that way, you'll get compressed Atmos with support for a maximum of 5.1.2 channels (no 7.1.2 without eARC).
