If PCC doesn't work then that appears to be a hardware issue, do you have a protective case or anything that might be pressing the volume keys?

PC Companion (PCC)

Bridge (for Mac)

Alternatives on How to backup Xperias

http://talk.sonymobile.com/thread/36355

yes definitely a hardware defect. My phone is in safe mode after 2 months from purchasing! not a single apps work from Play store after SAFE MODE! even Sony care people try resetting but no help! If hardware issue, can't help other than throwing away or anything else?
